Smoke Abatement.
During the year 129 observations have been made on factory
chimneys. Infringements were found in two instances, and letters
of warning were issued in these cases. It was not found necessary
to institute legal proceedings.
Repairs.
The number of complaints received from occupiers of dwellinghouses
has increased during the year with respect to general defects
and inadequate accommodation. This is undoubtedly due to the
fact that during the war period essential repairs were not carried
out and also the inability to build new houses. Owing to the acute
housing shortage it has not been possible to deal with slum clearance
areas and demolition of individual houses. Many overcrowded
dwellings and undesirable conditions have still therefore to be
tolerated.
Notices to remedy insanitary conditions have resulted in 2,611
houses being brought up to a reasonable standard of fitness. It
has been necessary to institute legal proceedings in 35 instances,
and the following list shows the result of such action:—
