There is still a marked improvement in the number of sound
mouths of school entrants at 5 years of age, which would appear
to be due to a decrease in the amount of sweets eaten by these
children, together with dietary improvements such as an increased
milk consumption, the use of cod liver oil, fruit juices and the
addition of calcium salts to the bread.
An examination was carried out with a view to comparing the
school entrants with those of the year 1939, when it was found
that the percentage of sound mouths in the 1945 school entrants
was 57.45 per cent., compared to 39.01 per cent, in 1939.
Elementary Schools.
All schools in the Borough, with the exception of Connaught
and Church Road (which were inspected at the end of 1944) were
dentally inspected during the year; but due to a gradual return
of the school population from evacuation it could not be said at
the end of the year that all school children in the area had been
dentally inspected during the year. The percentage of acceptance
rate was 70.1 per cent.
The number of attendances for treatment during the year
showed an increase over the previous year, with a slight decrease
in the amount of conservative work done and an increase in the
number of extractions, due in part to children returning from
evacuation who had not received regular treatment when away.
Particularly was this noticed in children returning from rural areas.
Table IV in the Statistical Summary gives some idea of the
work done for the Elementary School Children.
Secondary Schools.
The pupils of both the County High Schools for Boys and for
Girls were inspected and treated during the year.
The big discrepancy in the Secondary School (Table IV)
between the number found to require treatment and the number
actually treated is due to the period of treatment running over the
year end and into 1946.
The acceptance of treatment rate in the Boys' School was 65.73%.
„ ,, Girls' „ „ 66.24%.
