SCHOOL MEDICAL SERVICE.
GOVERNMENT EVACUATION SCHEME.
When war broke out the school roll was declining and an
approximate roll as at 31st March, 1940, would be 11,700. Estimated
figures showing the present distribution (December, 1940) of these
children are given below :—
(a) In Leyton 5,000
(b)Evacuated —
(i) In Essex (remaining from the September,
1939, evacuation) 900
(ii) In two National Camps—as from April,
1940. (Central Schools) 480
(iii) In West Country and Wales (5 counties).
June, 1940, evacuation 1,260
(iv) In Home and South Midland, etc., counties.

In addition to the above figures, 1,860 children under School age
have been officially evacuated with their Mothers.
Following the first evacuation in September, 1939, schooling
was resumed in all schools in Leyton on a voluntary basis early in
November of the same year, and compulsory education was restored
in April, 1940. Adequate air raid shelter accommodation is
provided in all Schools ; and normal schooling began again in the
Borough on 15th July, 1940.
