VERMINOUS AND OTHER CONDITIONS DUE TO
NEGLECT.
After the lapse of several weeks' exclusion from school,
during which time they have been instructed and cautioned, the
parents are summoned to attend before the various School
Attendance Sub-Committees.
The parents of 99 children were thus dealt with and
prosecutions instituted in 26 instances, as a result of which 4 fines
of 10s. and 22 fines of 5s. each were inflicted.
EDUCATION (PROVISION OF MEALS) ACTS.
Previous arrangements by which necessitous children attending
elementary schools receive their meals at coffee shops have
been continued. Frequent visits are paid by members of the
Canteen Committee and bv officials of the Education Committee
to ensure that the quality of the food and the management of the

rooms are satisfactory. The following statement shows the marked diminution in the number of children requiring to be fed during the period 5th to 18th December, 1915, as compared with the similar period in 1914:—

LEYTON CHILDREN'S COUNTRY HOLIDAY FUND.
The beneficent work of this voluntary fund, which was started
in 1913 by a committee of ladies and gentlemen resident in the
district, has been somewhat curtailed by the war. Nevertheless,
boys and girls have been sent to Canvey Island in different parties,
and the work of the Committee has been justified by the improvement
of the children's condition on return. Great care is taken
to ensure that none but suitable cases are helped, and every child
is certified by the medical officer before being sent awav.
