Circular letters are sent out in February and August to
employers who neglect to forward their lists of outworkers by the
first day of these months, with the result that the necessary information
is generally forthcoming on the receipt of these Reminder
Notices without further trouble.
1,795 visits were paid to outworkers' premises and 1,587
inspections of their homes were made. In 208 cases it was found
that the addresses returned on the list were incorrect, or that the
outworker had removed since the previous visit. Every effort was
made to trace removals.
Uncleanly and insanitary conditions in 431 instances were
found and dealt with.
TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES.
By the direction of the Council, the Medical Officer of Health
examines all men applying for the post of motorman or conductor
on the tramways.
In times of peace the numbers of men thus sent up for
examination have not been many, but with the outbreak of war
the numbers increased enormously owing to the enlistment in the
services of many of the tramway employees.
From August 4th to December 31st, 63 men were examined by
the Deputy Medical Officer of Health. This great increase of
work was found to interfere with his other duties; accordingly,
the Council has now made other arrangements.
