In connection with the inspections under the Housing and
Town Planning Act, 1909, three cottages in Browning Road, being
unfit for human habitation, have been demolished voluntarily by
the owner on the advice of the Medical Officer of Health, and
three new cottages erected in their place. In addition, 24 cottages
in the same road were found to be in need of extensive alterations.
Damp courses were inserted in the exterior walls of all, and
general renovation carried out. In 11 of the cottages the drainage
was very unsatisfactory; accordingly the drains at the rear were
entirely re-laid, new sanitary conveniences were provided, and
sinks fitted in the sculleries. In addition, separate water supply
was laid on to each of these cottages.
In another part of the district 10 very old cottages unfit for
human habitation, which were structurally not worth repair, and
some of which were ill-planned with regard to their situation, were
voluntarily pulled down, and will be replaced by the owner by
suitable dwellings.
