POLLUTION OF RIVERS AND STREAMS IN THE
DISTRICT.
The Dagenham Brook and Waterworks River continues to be
polluted by the effluents of Walthamstow and Leyton.
REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
No alteration in the system reported upon in the Reports of
the past two years has taken place. Each house has its refuse
removed twice weekly. The open two-wheeled cart is still used for
the collection.
18,835 tons of house refuse have been burnt in the Destructor.
In 1913 20,673 tons, and in 1912 21,312 tons of house refuse
were similarly burnt.
In September, repairs to the furnace fronts of the Refuse
Destructor were found necessary, which left only four cells available
for use. The whole of the house refuse could not be dealt
with in the Destructor, and the Council gave directions that the
surplus should be temporarily buried and covered with clinker in
the excavations on the Coronation Gardens extension.
FARCY.
A case of farcy in a horse occurred in the district. The
animal was slaughtered and the premises disinfected under the
supervision of the County Inspector.
OFFENSIVE TRADES.
Two applications were received for the establishment of the
trade of a fish fryer, viz., one in the High Road, Leytonstone, and
one in Cann Hall Road. In each case permission was granted by
the Council, but no further steps were taken by the applicants.
The Council has also granted permission for the establishment
of the trades of a tripe boiler, fat melter, fat extractor, gut
scraper and bone boiler at premises in Birkbeck Road,
