Unsound Food.
During the year 3 tons, 4 cwts, 186 lbs of food was voluntarily
surrendered to the Public Health Inspectors after being found unfit for
human consumption.
Lectures on Food Hygiene.
A course of six lectures on elementary food hygiene was given by
arrangement with the Ardleigh House Authorities and it was hoped
that a further course of advanced lectures would follow next year. This
was strictly speaking an Ardleigh House venture and one which it is
hoped to repeat. My thanks are due to the Warden for his interest in
what is after all largely a Public Health pre-occupation.
Slaughterhouses Act, 1958.
Two slaughterhouse licences were issued during the year.
Meat Inspection.
It will be readily apparent that a vast increase in the sheep and
lambs dealt with has occurred and although the number of cattle and
cows is down, this is counter balanced by an increase in the number of
calves and pigs.
The percentage of carcases with disease other than Tuberculosis
remained—save for a 4% increase in sheep and lambs—roughly as last
year.
The meat inspection work is of a demanding and time consuming
nature including regular week-end duties. This fact has, of course, been
recognised by you.
Carcases Inspected and Condemned.

The following tabular statement regarding the post-mortem inspection of animals at the two slaughterhouses is drawn up in accordance with the Appendix to Ministry of Health Circular 17/55 (last year's figures in brackets): —
