Upminster Road, Hornchurch, soil sewer improvement (12" diameter/9"
diameter) in conjunction with a surface water sewer improvement.
Work has commenced on: —
The construction of Parsonage Road Pumping Station which, pending
implementation of the Regional Scheme, provides the last soil sewer
outfall necessary for the making up of all the Rainham private streets
and the elimination of cesspools in Parsonage Road, Glebe Road, Allen
Road and Farm Road.
Surface Water Sewers.
The following works have been completed—a total length of approximately
800 yards: —
Sycamore Avenue relief (21" dia. /15" dia. /12" dia.).
Upminster Road, Hornchurch, improvement (30" dia./27" dia./21"
dia.).
Elgin Avenue relaying (15" dia.).
The following works are under construction:—
St. Mary's Lane, Upminster and Cranham, improvement comprising
approximately 2½ miles of new sewers, of which about 50% has been
completed by the Council's contractors.
Development removed from public sewers:
Wherever possible developers are persuaded of the advantages to be
obtained from connection to a public sewer, even when such development
is remote from the nearest sewer available. In one case of industrial
development at Rainham, the developers have agreed to provide a rising
main over half a mile long and the Sewerage Authority has agreed to
the acceptance of the discharge. This has obviated the installation of
a very large cesspool or septic tank, which could have given rise to
difficulties and possible nuisance.
Refuse Collection and Disposal.
Over the last year collection has been undertaken from approximately
41,000 properties in the district and approximately 35,000 tons
of material have been deposited in worked out gravel pits within the
area. The Council have granted free tipping facilities at their Gerpins
Lane Tip for all trade refuse and builders' rubbish transported there
by local traders. There has also been a free collection of material from
householders which could not be regarded as suitable for collection by
the normal refuse service. To some extent this service has reduced
the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish in ditches and on waste ground,
although unfortunately some of this still continues.
