New Sewers.
The Engineer and Surveyor informs me that 5,756 yards of soil
sewer of 9 inches, 15 inches and 18 inches diameter were laid during
the year.
Conversions.
Pail closets at 1, 2 and 3, Mashiters Cottages, New Road, Rainham,
were replaced by sewer connections.
Rivers.
The condition of the Ingrebourne on analysis presents an annual
and unsatisfactory picture, the remedy for which lies outside our
boundaries.
No large scale flooding occurred in 1959 but concerted steps are
being taken to obviate trouble from the Ravensbourne which on occasion
gives householders a great deal of inconvenience. Nature provides the
vegetation which impedes the flow of our streams but man provides
the less decorative effect by regarding the watercourses all too often as
an accessible vehicle for the disposal of bicycle wheels, tyres and a host
of other impedimenta.
Ditches.
The attraction of an open ditch allied to the relative unlikelihood
that the action will be specifically brought home to anyone makes it
a natural choice for the deposition of unwanted material. The chances
of this trouble being caused by persons outside our district are probably
greater than in the case of watercourses.
Cesspools.
The result of sewer construction in Lake Avenue, Abbey Wood
Lane and Briscoe Road will be to dispose of 95 cesspools.
Cesspools are on the whole a 'silent' nuisance but their presence
in an Urban Area can only be justified on grounds of dire necessity.
Swimming Pool.
The water is sampled regularly and the results have been uniformly
satisfactory.
Ministry of Health Circular 1/60 requests certain information
regarding public swimming baths. This information has kindly been
supplied by the Bath Superintendent and Engineer and is reproduced
herewith:—
"The Swimming Pool, set in the pleasant surroundings of Harrow
Lodge Park, is an indoor pool 110ft. x 42ft. and varies in depth from 3ft.
at the shallow end to 12ft. 6ins. below the diving stage. It is equipped
with 1 and 3 metres spring boards and 3 and 5 metres firm boards and
700 spectators can be seated for swimming events.
