River Pollution.
The annual story falls to be repeated of how the Ingrebourne is
far from an amenity to the district and how the Regional Sewerage
Scheme is still receiving consideration.
It can probably be re-emphasised that whether a Sewage Works
produces good, bad or indifferent effluent that effluent still is not
desirable as a major constituent of a stream especially one running
through an urban district from end to end. There could be no greater
mistake in this connection than to presume that a good effluent passed
into a watercourse is beyond reproach irrespective of what dilution that
watercourse is able to afford it.
Swimming Pool.
The Swimming Pool, during the first complete year of operation,
proved highly popular, 285,224 patrons being admitted for swimming
and a further 25,134 spectators. Included in the swimmers total are
67,352 visits by school children, attending in classes and during the
year 1,368 children gained primary and some, higher certificates of
the Hornchurch Schools Swimming Association. This may not at first
appear high, but when it is realised that most of the children attended
each week over the period, the percentage of certificates is very large.
In addition, Hornchurch Swimming Club have done yeoman service
with instruction and towards the end of the year obtained the services
of a well known Olympic coach to deal with the advanced swimmers.
From a practical point of view, the Swimming Pool water has been
maintained at a high standard of purity and clarity and the building
kept warm and well ventilated.
