SECTION B.
GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE
AREA.
Staffing.
Mr. J. M. Williams resigned during the year in order to take up
the appointment of Chief Public Health Inspector at Pontypool, and
Mr. T. H. Cutler resigned during the year to take up the appointment
of Deputy Chief Public Health Inspector with the County Borough of
Worcester. They were succeeded by Mr. R. J. Morse and Mr. E. Oliver.
It is with real regret that the death of Mr. L. Ager, a District
Public Health Inspector, is recorded. He saw service originally with
the Romford Rural District Council and time served only to reveal
the sterling nature of his work in Hornchurch. He was a most
unassuming man but there are many individuals in Hornchurch who
will feel that they have lost a friend.
The death of Mr. F. J. Gilbey, General Assistant and Rodent
Operator, also falls to be recorded. Mr. Gilbey was a reliable and
conscientious man whose loss is inevitably felt by the Department.
Mr. M. A. Jackson commenced with us as a Student Public Health
Inspector on the 1st July, 1957.
For the whole of the year we were more or less one Public Health
Inspector short on our establishment due to circumstances outwith our
control but nevertheless influencing the work of the Department.
Medical Examinations—Staff.
Staff arrangements remain as last year.
During the year arrangements were made for the examination of
222 (216) employees or prospective employees—79 (68) permanent and
143 (148) temporary. The 1956 figures are given in parenthesis.
Public Health Propaganda.
Talks were given to various bodies such as: —
The Chamber of Commerce.
Holy Cross Youth Club.
Murex Canteen Staff.
Ardleigh House Day Release Class.
Elm Park Branch Women's Co-operative Guild.
Local Food Traders Representatives.
During the course of the year Food Hygiene figured prominently
in the subjects chosen.
An 'Aldis' Projector was purchased so that suitable slides and film
strips could be used to supplement the value and enhance the interest
of the talks.
