Milk Sampling.
The 159 samples of milk taken from the dairies and in the streets
during the course of delivery to customers throughout the year were
submitted to the Counties Public Health Laboratories for testing. In
158 cases a satisfactory report was received. In addition 51 samples
were submitted to the Public Analysts and 12 for biological examination.
Biological Samples.
A positive result was obtained from the milk from a local farm
examined biologically for B. Tuberculosis. Whilst no danger to the
public health oh this account existed (because of the heat treatment to
which the milk would in any event have been subjected before human
consumption) it nevertheless indicates that even with the rapid advance
in the quality of our herds occasions still arise when serious unsatisfactory
results are obtained.
Liaison With Other Authorities.
Apart from our existing arrangement with the London County
Council through which the results of our testing of milk supplied to their
Children's Homes in this district were transmitted to them, agreement
has now been reached by which I supply the Brentwood Hospital Management
Committee with the results of our milk testing of the supplies
to their Harold Wood and Harold Court Hospitals.
School Canteens.
A very detailed report was presented to you during the year on the
condition of each school canteen and the extent to which it fell short
of the Food Hygiene Regulations 1955. The principal directions in
which individual canteens failed mainly related to certain points concerning
ventilation, hand-washing facilities, storage of clothng and the like.
It is the intention of the Council that the standard adopted for canteens
should be of the highest and on the attention of the Divisional Education
Committee being drawn to works which are considered necessary to
achieve this object, a considerable amount of relatively minor work was
proceeded with. The result was to effect a substantial improvement in
the conditions of the canteens (which were it should be emphasised by
no means bad initially) and a continuation of the necessary works to
ensure complete compliance with our requirements was in process at the
end of 1956.
Game Dealer's Licence.
One Game Dealer's licence was issued during the year pursuant to
Section 27(1) of the Local Government Act, 1894.
