SECTION B.
GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE
AREA.
Staffing.
Mr. W. C. Scales, Public Health Inspector, resigned in April. This
created a second vacancy in our establishment for Public Health
Inspectors and the two posts were eventually filled by the appointment
of Mr. A. V. J. Hutchings who commenced duty on the 1st June and
Mr. T. H. Cutler who started on 23rd July.
The Sanitary Inspectors (Change of Designation) Act, 1956, enacted
that Sanitary Inspectors appointed under the Local Government Act,
1933, shall henceforth be designated "Public Health Inspectors" and
the new designation of "Chief Public Health Inspector" and "Public
Health Inspectors" were applied to the positions of " Senior Sanitary
Inspector" and "Sanitary Inspectors" respectively as from 25th
September, 1956.
Medical Examinations—Staff.
Stalf arrangements remain as before save that an amended examination
fee has been agreed.
During the year arrangements were made for the examination of
216 (168) employees or prospective employees—68 (52) permanent and
148 (116) temporary. The 1955 figures are given in parenthesis.
Public Health Propaganda.
The Department was represented at a Rotary Careers Exhibition
when the exhibit consisted of a model Pasteurising Plant (kindly lent by
United Dairies) and a Volumetric Sulphur Dioxide apparatus (kindly
lent by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) in addition
to a variety of material illustrating public health in its many aspects as
a career. Considerable public interest was evinced in our exhibit.
A most instructive visit was paid during the year to a margarine
factory of Messrs. Van den Berghs & Jurgens Ltd., situated in a neighbouring
district.
A close liaison is maintained with the Area Medical Officer on
using the various clinics as avenues for propaganda. Various talks have
as usual been given by members of my staff to local organisations, the
most popular topic being the Food Hygiene Regulations.
The Council's Notice Boards covering the entire district are also
available for the periodic display of any particular aspect of the public
health and in addition the facilities of the County Library service are
very generously offered to us.
Laboratory Facilities.
Oldchurch Hospital laboratory with the kind assistance of Dr.
Atkinson is always ready to help us and on exceptional matters recourse
may be had to the Public Health Laboratory at Colindale.
