SECTION B
GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE
AREA.
Staffing.
The year saw the resignation of Mr. T. W. Glew, a District Sanitary
Inspector, who was succeeded by Mr. W. J. Batcheler.
The clerical staff was augmented by Miss E. Thompson who
commenced on 20th December, 1954.
The resignation and replacement of staff inevitably involves an
interval of staff shortage which reflects upon the annual work carried
out by the department.
Medical Examinations—Staff.
The services of private practitioners arc generally utilised. In
particular cases, e.g. an existing employee's suitability for continued
employment, any necessary examinations are carried out by the Medical
Officer of Health, specialist opinion being sought where required.
During the year arrangements were made for the examination of 232
(165) employees or prospective employees—58 (39) permanent and 174
(126) temporary. It will be noted that the numbers examined during
the current year show a very considerable increase over those for the
previous year. The 1953 figures are given in parenthesis.
Public Health Propaganda.
Use is niade generally of the material issued by the Central Council
for Health Education and the Council's notice boards are partially available
to us for this purpose.
Talks were also given by various members of the staff during the
year to various organisations, and this is probably one of the most
useful means of publicity.
The Public Health Committee gladly acccptcd an invitation to
visit a dairy supplying certain parts of our district. I think the
members who found it possible to visit the establishment found the
details both interesting and informative.
Laboratory Facilities.
Oldehurch Hospital laboratory with the kind assistance of Dr.
Atkinson is always ready to help us and on exceptional matters recourse
may be had to the Public Health Laboratory at Colindale.
Ambulance Service.
This is carried on under arrangements made by the County
Council.
