The standard of the previous years has been well maintained
and comment on certain details of the work will be found separately.
The main headings under which work was done may be noted
as follows:—
Housing 2,760 visits
Inspection of food and food
premises 2,474 „
General sanitation 1,918 ,,
Infectious diseases 622 „
Shops Act inspections 473 ,,
Factories and Outworkers 153 ,,
Undue emphasis on purely numerical aspects of the work may
be misleading although naturally a reasonable number of visits is
inseparable from an efficient service. The Sanitary Inspector should
however, have time to do both himself and his Authority justice.
His function of maintaining a sound hygienic environment is none
the less important because scientific progress has provided the basis
for such environment and ensured a public demand for it. The Inspector
still occupies an indispensable place in our schcme of preventive
medicine.
