Comparative Mortality after allowing for differences in the Population
Constitution.
The Registrar-Genreal has supplied a comparability factor by
which the crude death rate is to be multiplied in order to give a
mortality figure which is strictly comparable with those of other
Districts to which the same treatment has been applied.
The adjusted mortality rate for Hornchurch in the year 1938
thus obtained is 8.991.
The deaths of Hornchurch residents occurring in hospitals were
as follows:—

48 per cent. of the total Hornchurch deaths occurred in hospitals
or other institutions.
Deaths referred to the Coroner.
During the year the deaths of 18 males and 17 females were
investigated by the Coroner. Of these 29 were residents and 6
were persons belonging to other districts. An inquest was held in
20 cases in all of which a post-mortem examination was made. In
14 cases the Coroner certified the cause of death after autopsy and
in 1 case after inquiry only.
