The crude death rate calculated on a population of 72,010 was
8.6 per thousand.

Comparative Mortality after allowing for differences in the Population
Constitution.
The Registrar-General has supplied a comparability factor by
which the crude death rate is to be multiplied in order to give a
mortality figure which is strictly comparable with those of other
Districts to which the same treatment has been applied.
The adjusted mortality rate for Hornchurch in the year 1937
thus obtained is 9,546.
The deaths of Hornchurch residents occurring in hospitals were as follows:—

44 per cent of the total Hornchurch deaths occurred in hospitals
or other institutions.
Coroner's Inquisitions.
During the year the deaths of 38 males and 19 females were
investigated by the Coroner. Of these 46 were residents and 11 were
persons belonging to other districts. An inquest was held in 24
cases including 20 in which a post-mortem examination was made.
In 30 cases the Coroner certified the cause of death after autopsy
and in 3 cases after inquiry only.
