plus £6. 16. 0. costs. Upon a technical objection to the form of the Orders as drawn
up by the Court, the Magistrates dismissed the charges relating to the nuisances in
the house and garage, but made an Order for the abatement of the nuisance from the
heap of filth within 14 days.
Further proceedings had to be instituted later. Defendant was again represented
by Counsel and all charges denied. The Council's submissions were however upheld by
the Court which imposed fines totalling £27. 10. 0. plus £10. 10. 0. costs and
granted two Nuisance Orders relating to conditions inside the house and garage.
As a result of these proceedings, the Council being of the opinion that further
summary proceedings would afford an inadequate remedy for any recurrence of the
stautory nuisances, gave instructions that in the even; of there being sufficient
evidence of any of the present Orders having been contravened without reasonable
excuse, for proceedings to be commenced in the High Court under Section 100 of the
Public Health Act, 1936. At the time of the writing of this report, these proceedings
were under consideration.
Housing Act, 1957
During the year under review 11 houses were dealt with under the Housing Act,
1957 involving the making of 1 Demolition Order and 10 Closing Orders.
Certificates of Unfitness were issued under the Housing (Financial Provisions)
Act, 1958 in respect of 45 houses in the Council's ownership.
Of the 56 houses, 16 were actually closed during the year and 19 were demolished.
In addition, 17 houses were closed and 45 demolished in respect of which Closing
or Demolition Orders had been made or Certificates of Unfitness issued prior to 1960.
During 1960, 7 5 families involving 180 persons were displaced from unfit properties,
67 families involving 164 persons being rehoused by the Council and 8 families
involving 16 persons being rehoused by other authorities or finding their own accommodation.
94 surveys were carried out of properties in areas considered to be in need of
redevelopment and reports submitted to the Council as a result of which two such
areas were defined -
(a) Sanders Lane, Mill Hill, N.W.7. comprising 50 properties.
(b) Cricklewood Lane (South) N.W.2. comprising 44 properties.
The properties will now accordingly be acquired by the Council for demolition
and the areas subsequently redeveloped.

for use in connection with his negotiations for the acquisition of the properties for
