minimum and we have received satisfactory co-operation from the chiropodists on our
panel in making this scheme run smoothly and particularly in getting back to the quotas
authorised by the County Council. The Committee are most appreciative of the valuable
work done by Mrs. McCabe who travels many miles each year to give treatment to housebound
patients. They are also grateful to the Middlesex County Council for their readiness
to discuss with us the various problems which have arisen during this period of
transition.
Holidays
A party of 51 went for the customary week's holiday to the Hatherley Hotel,
Cliftonville from May 27th to June 3rd. The party was again accompanied by Red Cross
Nurse 0' Brien to whom the Committee's most grateful thanks are due. We continue to
give assistance with special holidays which may be recommended to us by the hospital
almoners, doctors and others.
Handcrafts
A most successful exhibition of work by Over 60's was held at the Hodford Hall
on Saturday, May 14th. Over 300 exhibits were received. As an experiment, neighbouring
boroughs were invited to compete and eight sent group exhibits. Besides individual
cash prizes, two trophies, made for us by pupils of Barnfield Road Secondary
School, were awarded. The group trophy was won by the British Red Cross Society and
that for neighbouring boroughs by Finchley. The standard of work was commendably
high. Judging was done by Miss Hincks and Miss Bickers of the Middlesex County
Council Welfare Department. The exhibition was opened by the Mayor, Councillor
S.D. Graves and the Mayoress presented the trophies. Mr. Holland, the Area Welfare
Officer, and his assistants, staged a most interesting exhibit showing work done by
blind craftsmen and the facilities available for their training and instruction.
Information Pamphlet
Starting in April, the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance have agreed
to send this to each new old age pensioner. A loose leaf has been printed to bring
the pamphlet up to date.
Clubs
The clubs for elderly people which are run by the various organisations represented
on the Committee continue to flourish. The Committee are most grateful to the
voluntary organisations and to their members without whose hard work and enthusiasm
these clubs could not continue to exist. We welcome a newcomer among the Friendship
Clubs - The Alyth Club which meets weekly in the very pleasant hall attached to the
Synagogue in Alyth Gardens, N.W. 11.
