I would like to express my appreciation of the work carried out by the staff at
the Laboratory who, during the course of the year, has given considerable advice and
help to the Public Health Department.
The number of samples taken in respect of milk, ice cream, domestic water supplies
and swimming pools is shown elsewhere in the report.
Welfare of Old People
I am indebted to County Councillor Miss E.M. Weavers, B. A., F. R. S. A., Chairman
of the Hendon Old People's Welfare Committee and to Mr. E.B. Pinder Davis, Hon.
Secretary, for the Report for the year 1960-61.
"The most important change in any one activity during the past year has been the
extension of the chiropody service which the Committee has been operating for the
Middlesex County Council since April 1st 1959. For the twelve month period ending
March 31st, 1960 there was no change in the service except that the County became
responsible for the grant of £170 which had previously been received from the
National Corporation for the Care of Old People. Under the Extended Scheme, which
started on April 1st 1960, all old age pensioners became eligible for treatment in
private surgeries approved by the Medical Officer of Health to the Borough and which
were already on our panel. This resulted in a substantial increase in the number of
treatments given in the first two quarterly periods.
When the totals for the first two periods had been received, the Health Committee
of the Middlesex County Council ruled that, for the future, the number of treatments
in any quarter must not exceed the figure for the period April 1st to June 30th 1960.
This meant, for a certain time, placing new patients on a waiting list and, where
possible, extending the intervals between visits for other patients. The situation
was, however, eased in December when chiropody sessions started in the County Council's
permanent clinics in the Borough.

Below are the totals of treatments for the twelve month period April 1st 1960 to March 31st 1961.
