Of the 43 children, 33 died before reaching the age of 1 month, giving a neonatal
mortality rate of 16.82 per 1,000 live births compared with 15.6 for England
and Wales.
Maternal Mortality
I am pleased to report that no mother died as the result of childbirth.
Deaths from Cancer of the Lung and Bronchus
During the year in Hendon 30 men and 9 women under 65 years of age died from
this cause.
Smoking in Youth Cluhs
An investigation into the smoking habits of a sample of members of two youth
clubs has been recorded. These clubs are similar in that smoking is not permitted
on the club premises and there are relatively fewer smokers than in some clubs
visited in previous years.
At Edgware Maccabi the non-smoking girls outnumber the smoking girls in a ratio
of 2:1. A noticeable feature at this youth club is the number of boys who claim to
be pipe smokers.
