Health Statistics
Population
According to the figure supplied by the Registrar-General the estimated mid-year
population for 1960 was 151,850.
This is 4,007 less than the Census figure for 1951.
Births
The number of live births recorded during the year decreased by 4, 1,961
occurring compared with 1,965 in 1959, giving a decreased corrected birth rate of
12.39 per 1,000 Home Population compared with 12.45 last year.
The rate is less than that for the County of Middlesex which is 15.4 and less
than that for England and Wales, which is 17.1 per 1,000 Home Population.
The number of stillbirths decreased from 37 to 34, giving a stillbirth rate of
17.04 per 1,000 total births compared with 18.83 in 1959. The rate for the Borough
of Hendon compares favourably with that for England and Wales, which is 19.7 per
1,000 total births.
Deaths
There was a decrease of 41 in the number of deaths. This gives a corrected
death rate of 11.11 per 1,000 Home Population compared with 11.52 in 1959. This rate
is slightly higher than that for the County of Middlesex, which is 11.1 per 1,000
Home Population; the rate for England and Wales is 11.5 per 1,000 Home Population.
As in previous years, heart and associated diseases accounted for the largest
number of deaths, 619 people dying from these causes. Second in the principal causes
was cancer.
Deaths from motor vehicle and other accidents remained the same as in 1959, 45
people dying from these causes.
Twenty-five people committed suicide, an increase of 2 on the previous year.
Infantile Mortality
Forty-three children died in the first year of life compared with 38 in 1959,
giving an infantile mortality rate of 21.92 per 1,000 live births.
The rate for England and Wales is 21.7 per 1,000 related live births. The rate
for the County of Middlesex is 18.6 per 1,000 live births.
