NOTIFICATIONS OTHER THAN TUBERCULOSIS
Poliomyelitis
There was a considerable reduction in the number of cases of poliomyelitis
notified during the year, 13 cases occurring compared with 55 in 1955 when the
disease assumed epidemic proportions and was in fact the worst outbreak in Hendon
since the disease became notifiable.
Of the 13 cases, 8 were paralytic and 5 non-paralytic. Two of the cases were
fatal One of these cases, although notified in 1956 died in February 1957 and this
death will be counted therefore in the Registrar-General s return for 1957
The cases, with the exception of 2, occurred in the second half of the year and
the monthly distribution was as follows:-

Ten of the cases occurred in children up to the age of 14 years, the remaining
three being adults aged 29, 31 and 52 years respectively.
The cases were spread throughout the Borough and the ward distribution was as

Daring the year prophylactic inoculations against the disease were introduced
and I am indebted to the Area Medical Officer for the following figures;-
