In all cases where a house has been vacated by
a tenant to take up occupation of a Council house
the owner of the house vacated has been asked to
re-let the vacant tenement or house to a Hendon
resident with a smaller family. Many owners have
co-operated with the Council in this way.
(III) FITNESS OF HOUSES.
1 (a) General standard of housing.
Quite half of the houses in the district have been
erected in comparatively recent years. After the
opening of the Golders Green Tube Station in 1906
the district commenced to develop very rapidly and
continued to do so until the outbreak of War in
1914. During the past 5 years great building development
has again taken place, especially in connection
with the extension of the Underground to
Hendon and Edgware. The houses built during
these periods were mainly of the villa type, varying
in size, with Shopping Centres and Flats and consist
of houses of modern plan with modern drainage, and
good sanitary fittings including bathrooms.
The older properties include a considerable number
of tenement dwellings, some divided into'
separate flats and others let off in flats without being
divided, together with larger residences. These are
in a reasonable state of repair, and very few have
been allowed to get into a really bad state or into
such a dilapidated condition as to be beyond repair,
or to warrant closure.
A very large proportion of houses are occupied
by "Owner Occupiers" who are interested in keepin
them in a reasonable state of repair, and these
houses do not demand a large amount of inspection.

are very old, and from time to time one of these
lapses into such a condition as not to be capable of
repair. In the course of Inspection the defects
