SEWERAGE AND DRAINAGE.
The district is well provided for in the matter of drainage
and sewerage, all the houses with very few exceptions
being connected to the public sewers.
The Sewage is dealt with at the Council's Sewage Works
on each side of the River Brent. The works have been very
considerably extended and improved during the last five years
and I am indebted to the Council's Engineer and Surveyor,
Mr. A. O. Knight, for the following description
"In the years 1913 and 1914 the Council laid down
and submitted to the Ministry of Health a complete Scheme
of Sewage Disposal for the District based upon the principle
of treating all the sewage in the watershed on the South of
the River Brent on that side of the river, and the whole of the
sewage in the watershed on the North of the River Brent on
the north side of the river.
There were therefore to be two entirely separate sewage
disposal works.
The Ministry of Health approved the Scheme in general
outline and confirmed an Order to enable the Council to
acquire the necessary land.
The Council then took in hand the construction of the
sewage disposal works on the south side of the Brent and a
contract was placed in 1914 and the work commenced. The
outbreak of the War stopped these works and it was not until
the year 1921 that it was possible to re-commence the same.
These works comprise Screening Chambers, Sedimentation
Tanks, and Percolating Filters with automatic distributors
and the necessary Humus tanks, etc., were duly completed and
have been in operation for several years past with entire
success.
As soon as the foregoing works were completed the Council
took in hand the new works required on the north side
of the Brent. The general principles of the Scheme were
the same as those on the south side but the works were somewhat
larger in capacity. These works were completed in
June of last year and have since been working successfully.
The sludge from the new works on the north of the Brent
is pumped across the valley to the land which the Council
own on the south side and thus all sludge treatment is concentrated
at one portion of the works.
