SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DISTRICT.
WATER SUPPLY.
The water supply of the district is derived from the Mains
of two Companies, viz., The Colne Valley Water Company,
which furnishes the supply of water to the North, NorthWestern
and Western area, and The Metropolitan Water
Board which supplies the remaining portion of the District.
The source of the Colne Valley Company's Supply is from
deep wells sunk in the Chalk at Bushey and Eastbury, and
that of the Metropolitan Water Board the River Thames at
Staines.
Both supplies are constant and plentiful and of good
quality. In recent years the practice of chlorination has
been adopted in the case of both supplies and the waters may
be regarded as thoroughly safe drinking waters. Every house
in the District is furnished with a supply of water and each
Company requires the provision of a storage cistern in dwellings,
and these, in nearly every instance are of galvanised
iron, and provided with close fitting covers.
In all recently built houses a "draw-off tap" is fitted
on the rising main for the special supply of drinking water.
In the course of Inspection special attention is given to
the Storage Cistern to ensure cleanliness and proper
coverings.
RIVERS AND STREAMS.
The Rivers and Streams which include the River Brent,
Silk Stream, and Dollis and Mutton Brooks, flow from North
to South on the North-Eastern and North-Western sides of
the District, and form the natural drainage of the District,
having their confluence at the Welsh Harp Reservoir, which
feeds the Regents Canal.
Any pollution detected by the discharge into these
Streams of any offensive effluent from cesspool overflows, or
drains, etc., is prevented. Throughout the year no complaints
as to pollution have been received from the Middlesex
County Council, or the Rivers Convervancy Authorities.
