The estimated population for the whole district is obtained
by adding the estimated populations of the various wards.
On the whole, I think that the method of estimating the
population on the basis of the number of occupied dwellings
is the one most likely to give accurate results for this district.
It is interesting to compare the increase in the number of
electors with the estimated increase of the population. The
Accountant has kindly supplied me with the figures relating
to the electorate.
In 1921 the census population was 56,013 and the number
of local government electors on the autumn register was
22,595.
In 1923 the number of local government electors on the
autumn register was 24,204.
Assuming that the number of electors bore the same
proportion to the population in 1923 as it did in 1921,
the population in 1923 would be 60,001. My estimate (see
Table II.) is 60,495.
It will be noticed that the two figures approximate fairly
closely.
The following particulars have been extracted from the

of the Bell Lane School, and kindly furnished to me by him:—
