The above Table gives the estimated population at
the middle of each year since the date of the Census. In
arriving at the estimate for 1923, I have used the same method
as in 1922, based on the assumption that the average number
of persons per dwelling in each ward has remained the
same as it was at the date of the Census. I have, however,
introduced a slight modification in order to make allowance
for any of the new dwellings which may have fallen vacant
after being occupied. It is practically impossible to discover
the actual number of dwellings vacant on any particular date
and this can therefore only be estimated.
The 1921 Census showed that there were then in the
Urban District of Hendon 11,028 structurally separate dwellings
occupied by private families and 569 vacant (total
11,597). The figures for vacant dwellings were not given
for the various wards.
Between the date of the census and 30th June, 1923,
1,003 new dwellings were taken into occupation in the
Hendon Urban District.
Assuming that the proportion of vacant dwellings remained
the same the number of vacant dwellings among the
1,003 new dwellings would be 49 as shown by the following
proportion sum :—
11597 569. 1003 49.
These 49 vacant dwellings were distributed over the various
wards in the proportion of the number of new houses
taken into occupation in each ward. Deducting the appropriate
figure from the number of new dwellings taken into
occupation in each ward we get the estimated number of
occupied dwellings in each ward to be added to the actual
number shewn by the census.
Taking Mill Hill for example:—
1 he number of new dwellings taken into occupation since
the census was 46. The proportion of 49 which fell to be
deducted from Mill Hill's new dwellings was 2, giving a nett
addition of 44. The number of persons per dwelling in Mill
Hill at the census was 4.17.
44 x 4.17 = 183 = the increase in the population of Mill
Hill since the census.
