The number on the rolls shows a decrease of 223 on the
previous year and this is mainly accounted for by two factors
—the decision of the Committee not to admit children under
five and the number of children (about 40) who were released
(after careful enquiry into all the circumstances) from further
attendance at school for the purpose of entering into bencficial
employment. Wessex Gardens School was not quite ready
for occupation owing to the delay of the contractor by reason
of his not being able to obtain the necessary building
materials, but it is not anticipated that this School will be
opened for some considerable time. The enlargement of St.
Mary's C. of E. School has been completed, and the school
work there is now being carried on under the best conditions.
With the approval of the Board of Education it was not
thought desirable to proceed with the erection of the Hale
