On looking at the above table it will be seen that Cricklewood,
Burnt Oak, and Central Hendon have kept at about the same
rate as 1897, Central Hendon coming out at exactly the same
figure. Child's Hill shows a very large drop, being 27.0 per 1000
in 1897 and only 15 0 last year. Mill Hill shows a large
increase from 9 6 to 16.1, and Temple Fortune rises from 10.0 to
16.7. West Hendon has also experienced a considerable rise.
St. Vincent's Orphanage I have placed separately. There have
been twelve deaths in this institution during the year, and this
works out to the high figure of 60 per 1,000, taking the population
at 200. This is a very high mortality, but it must be
remembered that this institution acts the part of what one might
term a charitable hospital, although not in the strict sense, for
the children admitted are obtained mostly from the slums and
streets of London, and are generally very scrofulous and debilitated
generally; this is shown by the return of deaths, when
every year a large proportion, 4 out of 12, die from tuberculous
disease. Of the 12 deaths this year 3 died from measles, 1
consumption, 2 from heart disease, 3 from tubercular meningitis,
