THE DEATH RATE.
In estimating the death-rate for the year, it may be well to
again remark that the Hendon Workhouse, besides Hendon,
accommodates the parishes of Willesden, Harrow, Great and
Little Stanmore, Edgware and Kingsbury. The following table
gives the average number chargeable to Hendon during the past
year:—
(a) Average number of inmates in Union for year 336
(b) ,, ,, ,, chargeable to Hendon 66
(c) Number of Deaths in Union for year 116
(d) ,, ,, chargeable to Hendon 29
(e) Number of Births in Union for year 29
(f) ,, ,, chargeable to Hendon.. 8
Deducting all the deaths which belonged to other parishes, and
deducting also from the population the average number of
inmates in the Union from other parishes, it brings the deathrate
for Hendon to 13.6 per 1,000.
St. Vincent's Orphanage, Mill Hill, has been omitted in
estimating this result, for the children at this institution are a
moving population, and after a short stay are discharged. Under
these circumstances I think it only fair not to include this
institution in estimating the rate. The number at this Orphanage
is about two hundred.
I have differentiated the various localities in the parish, giving
the number of houses and population with the death-rate in order
of merit.
