Food Hygiene.
The structural standard of food premises is, with very few
exceptions, satisfactory. There is however no doubt that the
standard of food handling still leaves much to be desired and
the need for education in the basic principles of food hygiene
is a most pressing need for persons engaged in the food trade.
It is true, I think, that this kind of work can most effectively
be done at the actual place of work of the food handler, by
pointing out undesirable practices and suggesting better and
safer methods. But when small groups of food handlers can be
gathered together other forms of health education become practicable,
i.e. the use of film strips, cine films and display material.
During the year these forms were used on an increasingly
large scale. Thirteen lectures were given to a total of 193
food handlers, from canteens, hotels, bakehouses, shops, restaurant
kitchens etc. and, looking to the future, talks and fill"
shows on the basic principles of hygienic food handling were
given to 800 senior girls, in small groups, in local schools.
No certificates of exemption from certain requirements of
the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955, have been granted.
Bye laws under Section 15 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938,
have been in force in the district since July, 1950.
