PREVENTION OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION
The general standard of efficiency in the management of
industrial furnaces in the area is. satisfactory and ready co-operation
is received from firms guilty of occasional lapses. During the year,
209 observations were made on factory chimneys and, arising from
subsequent action, one firm installed a grit arrestor, another
converted two Lancashire boilers to automatic stoking, and another
made adaptations to their plant which resulted in a considerable
reduction of smoke.
