Poisonous and toxic materials, in reasonable quantities,
can normally be disposed of through the G.L.C. Any request for
disposal is passed to the Scientific Branch at County Hall who
inspect and analyse the material and advise the method of disposal.
No charge is made for this service, but usually the materials
would have to be taken to a contractor who specialises in this
type of disposal and appropriate charges made by him.
Radioactive Substances Act. I960
Mention was made in last year's report of the four premises
in the Borough where radioactive materials are stored and/or
used, and of the large commercial undertaking which installed a
radioactive lightning conductor.
During the year review copies of three further certificates
of registration were received from the Ministry of Housing and
Local Government—one under Section 1 of the Act in respect of
a large industrial undertaking; the second under Section 3 of the
Act in respect of mobile radioactive apparatus which is normally
stored when not in use at premises in the Borough, and the third
authorising the disposal and accumulation of radioactive waste
on the Company's disposal site.
Rivers, Streams & Watercourses
I am indebted to the Essex River Authority for the following
in formation
"A survey of the River Ingrebourne in September showed
the water to be clean, although reflecting the high proportion of
sewage effluentsarising from theNags HeadLane sewage disposal
works of Brentwood Urban District Council. The performance of
this works has been satisfactory throughout the year and it has
kept the high standards imposed by the River Authority consistently.
The River Beam was also surveyed during the year, and it
was found to be clean, although some minor sources of pollution,
which are being rectified, were found.
The intensity of radioactivity and the numbers of bacteria
of sewage origin were checked at key points along both rivers
regularly throughout the year, and they were found to be at a low,
safe level at all times."
