Generally the results were satisfactory. Some of the samples
of fresh cream were not entirely satisfactory.
No report has so far been received with regard to the
Working Party on hygiene and production of fresh cream. It will
be recalled that a survey and sampling programme was carried
out in 1969. It was hoped that there would have been a bacteriological
standard introduced by this time.
Imported Food Regulations. 1968
Last year's report mentioned the fact that under the above
mentioned Regulations it is now permissible for appropriately
sealed food containers to be examined at the place of destination
and not at the port of entry.
During the year notification was received of the arrival in
the Borough of 95 such containers all of which were the subject
of inspection before being released for sale. This traffic in the
main consists of meat and groceries consigned to meat depots
and grocery warehouses of which there are several in the Borough.
Soft Drinks (Amendment) Regulations, 1970
These amending Regulations extend by one year, ending
with 31st December. 1971. the period during which the words
"permitted artificial sweetener'' may appear in place of the word
"saccharin'' on a label or container of anv soft drink which
contains a permitted artificial sweetener and which is sold,
consigned or delivered for human consumption.
Labelling of Food Regulations, 1970
Stricter and wider controls over the labelling and advertisement
of food and over the claims made for certain foods will
come into force on 1st January. 1973 under new Regulations
laid before Parliament on 25th March by the Minister of Agriculture.
Fisheries and Food acting jointly with the Secretary of
State for Social Services. The new Regulations represent a major
step forward in consumer protection. They will require food
labels to be clearer and more informative, so that consumers will
have a better idea of what it is that thev are buying. Strict controls
are placed on the claims that can be made forcertain foods,
for example, claims relating to slimming, to the presence in
foods of vitamins and minerals and to the tonic or medicinal
