The Belford Centre
This Junior Training Centre provides places for 72 subnormal
children, and was fully occupied throughout the year.
The Havering Centre
This new Adult Training Centre providing places for 200
mentally handicapped men and women opened on 2nd March, 1970,
and replaced the Belford Adult Centre whose accommodation
was limited to 146. The new building, providing spacious workshops,
a training flat, a recreation hall and a dining hall, was
erected at a total cost of approximately £180,000.
Special Cafe Unit
The Special Care Unit, opened at Collier Row in 1969,
continued to functior. there throughout the year as plans for its
transfer to the former Belford Adult Centre were delayed pending
the necessary work of adaptation being carried out. Accommodation
for 30 persons is provided at the Unit which was fully
occupied throughout the year.
Residential Care
Residential accommodation for 30 mentally handicapped
men is provided at Westmarsh Lodge. This hostel has continued
to function to full capacity throughout the year, the majority of
those resident attending the adjacent Adult Training Centre.
Holidays
84 persons attending the Adult Training Centre were provided
with a holiday of one week at Rogerson Hall Holiday
Camp near Lowestoft, and a further 25 had a week's holiday at
Ramsgate.
44 holidays of one week's duration at Ramsgate were also
arranged for children attending the Junior Training Centre.
HOMELESS FAMILIES
Close co-ordination continued between the Health and
Welfare, Children's and Housing Departments in ensuring that
information regarding family problems which might lead to
possible homelessness was referred to social workers, so that
effective preventive care could be initiated.
