Adaptations to Homes
68 adaptations were carried out at the homes of physically
handicapped persons during the year. Many of these consisted of
handrails in toilets, bathrooms, staircases, etc., fitting of ramps
and widening of doors for wheelchairs, etc., but in some instances
fairly large adaptations were provided to meet a particular need.
Purpose-Built Dwellings
By the beginning of 1970 the number of purpose built
dwellings designed by the Borough Council for physically handicapped
persons had increased to ten, and one further dwelling
was completed during the year. Three further dwellings were in
the final planning stage at the end of the year.
Adaptations to Houses for Home Dialysis Machines
Five home dialysis machines had been installed in houses
in the Borough prior to 1970, and four further patients had been
referred to this department. Of the four, two had had machines
installed with financial assistance from the Council, and one
without assistance. The fourth patient died before arrangements
were put in hand. One further patient was referred during the year
and arrangements in this case were still being finalised at the
end of 1970. Close co-operation is required in all cases between
the hospital dialysis unit, the Borough Architect and the officers
in the health and welfare department as alterations necessary can,
in some instances, be extensive.
Occupation Centre for the Physically Handicapped
The Faringdon Occupational Centre continued to function
to the full capacity of 60 places throughout the year. Patients
transported by the special ambulance vehicle attend twice weekly
whilst others with their own transport attend daily. The number
of persons on the register was approximately 180 throughout the
year.
Holidays
A total of 131 physically handicapped persons were provided
with holidays during 1970. The majority were catered for
at Bognor (47) or Caister (27), the remainder being arranged
through various voluntary organisations, or in some instances,
aided by the Council financially when they had made private
arrangements.
