Screening Tests
Vision and hearing screening tests by school nurses are
included as part of the periodic medical inspections and additional
tests are carried out at about 7 to 8 years of age. Any child
failing the screening test is referred to the school doctor for
further investigation. The number of routine screening tests
carried out during the year was as follows:-

Cleanliness Inspections
18218 routine cleanliness inspections were carried out
by the school nurses during the year. 109 cases of infestation
were found but none of these was sufficiently serious to require
a cleansing notice to be issued to the parent.
Specialist Services
The following specialist consultation and treatment services
for school children are provided at the Council's clinics by
arrangement with the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital
Board
a) Ophthalmic
Ophthalmic specialist sessions are held at 8 of the
Council's clinics.
During the year 3483 pupils attended, including 931
new referrals.
1031 prescriptions for glasses were issued.
b) Orthoptic
Orthoptic treatment sessions, providing non-surgical
treatment of squint, are normally held at 2 of the
Council's clinics.
One orthoptist resigned at theend of February, however,
and the service was restricted until December, when
a replacement was appointed. 68 pupils were referred
to the orthoptist and 276 treatments were carried out.
