School Population:-
85 Primary School 26,437 pupils
24 Secondary School (inc. Grammar Schools) 16,402 pupils
2 Technical Schools 1,504 pupils
3 Schools for E.S.N, pupils 388 pupils
TOTAL 114 schools 44,731 pupils
In September 1970 Newtons Junior School was opened and
Chase Cross Secondary Boys' and Girls' Schools were merged to
form a single co-educational school.
Medical Inspections
8164 children were given a full examination by School
Medical Officers at periodic medical inspections during the year.
This included examination of all new entrants to infant schools.
Junior school pupils are examined on a selective basis and only
those considered likely to need medical attention are given a full
examination. Selection is made by the School Doctor after examination
of previous medical records and information provided by
parents, teachers, health visitors and school nurses.
The selection procedure was also extended to further
secondary leaver examinations and will eventually be adopted for
the whole of this age group.
2935 pupils were found not to warrant a full medical examination
following the selection procedure.
As a result of the periodic medical inspections 1299pupils
(15.9%) were found to have 1562 conditions requiring treatment.
A further 3903 conditions detected were kept under observation.
Arrangements were made for children to be referred for
investigation or treatment, as necessary, in consultation with
their family doctors.
