from experience that a ratio of one nurse to4,000 or even to 3,500
population is necessary. Within these ratios there should be a
certain number of state enrolled nurses and in addition a number
of ancillary staff who work in a supporting role to S.R.N, and
S.E.N. By the appointment of ancillary staff the trained nurses
are able to delegate work and thereby give priority to certain
fields of activity.
The trend towards nurse attachment schemes has been
encouraged by the Department of Health and Social Security, and
meetings were held with representatives of the National Health
Service Executive Council and with the Local Medical Committee
with a view to extending attachment schemes. At present four
nurses are fully attached to general medical practitioner groups
within the Borough and it is hoped to hasten progress in this
direction during 1971when the anticipated increase in the establishment
may make this possible.
