health visiting staff could have been larger. There is a greater
demand from the schools than can be met, but other demands on
the health visitor's time, limit her activity in this important field.
Speech Therapy
There was no improvement in the staffing situation during
the year and only two and a half posts from an establishment of
5 are filled.
367 children were newly referred and 214 of the more
urgent cases commenced treatment. A total of 7055 treatments
were carried out.
At the end of the year 192 children were receiving speech
therapy and a further 367 were being kept under observation.
156 children were waiting for treatment to be commenced.
Day Nurseries:
The four day nurseries which provide for the care of 190
children up to the age of five years had a continued average
daily attendance of 159 compared with 160.3 in 1969. The
demand on accommodation for children requiring admission on
priority grounds continues as before, and at the end of the year
60 such priority children were waiting admission. The figures
relating to the individual nurseries are given in the following
table:-
