PERSONAL HEALTH SERVICES SECTION
No major changes occurred in the Personal Health Services
section of the department during the year. The arrangement mentioned
in my last report for a team of social workers and child
care officers to be accommodated at the Health Centre, Harold
Hill, were finalised early in 1970, enabling both health and social
workers covering this part of the Borough to work in close coordination.
MATERNITY SERVICES:
Ante-Natal Care:
The statistics relatingto this Authority's ante-natal clinics
are given below. Both the number of sessions and the number of
women attending continued to decline, mainly due to the higher
proportion of mothers receiving ante-natal care from hospitals
arid their General Practitioners and to some extent the decrease
in the birth rate.

Ante-natal and Post-natal Clinics

Number of women attending ClinicsAnte-natalPost-natalTotal

Mothercraft and Relaxation Classes:
These classes continued to be well attended, 770 mothers
booked for hospital confinement attending as against 776 in 1969.
The number of mothers booked for home confinement however fell
from 78 to 21, and this is accounted for by the fact that in the
main only those women expecting their first baby attend the
classes, and these are priority for hospital confinement.
Midwifery:
At December 1970 24 full-time and three part-time midwives
were in post, a reduction of one compared with the same date in
1969.
