Table 38 shows that the general rise in numbers of families
in temporary accommodation throughout London was not reflected
in Havering. The cause of this may well be the considerable
amount of time allocated by social workers in advising and
assisting families to prevent homelessness. Though this reduces
the demands on the department's temporary accommodation, it
undoubtedly increases the demands made on the social work
staff, who are finding that more and more of their work now
involves accommodation problems and people having housing
difficulties.
The average length of stay of the 21 families admitted to
the Brentwood Road temporary accommodation during 1968 was
11 weeks. All but three of the families were re-housed by the
Borough Housing Department.
