this, however, the majority of children have the opportunity
of learning to swim before leaving school.
The Playing Fields of the area, some 12 acres in extent,
are well used, and with further pavilion accommodation this
use could be more widely developed. An additional small field
is being procured by the Committee at Stanley Road.
During the year the following courses for the further
training of Teachers and Leaders have been held in which
Teachers from the Borough have fully participated: —
1. Recreative Course for Women Teachers.
2. Recreative Course for Women Teachers of
Voluntary Organisations.
3. Recreative Course for Men Teachers and
Leaders.
In the above-mentioned Courses the Board of Education's
Handbook "Recreation and Physical Fitness" (1937)
was introduced.
4. Course for Men Teachers in Junior Departments.
Work on the Board of Education's Syllabus (1933) was
revised.
5. Course for Men Teachers in Senior Departments.
A Gymnastic Scheme for Senior Boys' Schools was introduced.
Further Courses are planned for the first quarter of 1939,
for Women 'Teachers in Infants' and Junior Departments as
well as Courses for Teachers in Swimming.
A party of Danish schoolboys gave a Demonstration of
Gymnastics in July at the Summerside Playing Field. This
was attended by 3,000 Elementary and Secondary School
children and Teachers, and proved of great value.
Provision of Milk in Schools.
The number of children having milk in school continues
to increase. On the 1st October 62% of the children on the
roll were having milk. Necessitous cases are referred to the
Children's Care Committee by Head Teachers and 56 children
were given milk free of cost.
