THE PREVALENCE OF, AND CONTROL OVER,
INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
Diphtheria.
Although the number of cases notified in 1938 was
slightly higher than in 1937, namely 22 as compared with
11, it was still very low, and it is very gratifying that once
again there was no death from this disease.
Twenty...one cases were removed to hospital, and 1 mild
case in a good class house was kept at home.
Immunisation against Diphtheria.
During the year immunisation of the children in the
junior elementary schools was continued. Approximately
75% of these children have now been immunised. Five
hundred and forty...four children received the full course of
three injections of T.A.F. The Schick Test was applied to
419 children who had previously been immunised, and of
the 409 of these who were subsequently examined, 406 were
negative and three positive. Thus 99.2% had been successfully
immunised. No immunised child contracted diphtheria in 1938.
I wish once more to record my appreciation of the
valuable co...operation of the head teachers in making this
scheme a success.
The following table shows the number of children dealt
with during 1938
