SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
Water.
The water supply of the Borough was dealt with at
length in the report for 1937.
Routine samples were taken throughout 1938 and all
were satisfactory. Each month a copy of a report of an independent
bacteriologist was furnished by the Barnct
District Gas and Water Company, and in each case this
report was satisfactory.
Removal of House and Trade Refuse.
House refuse is collected weekly, and in the summer
months a bi-weekly collection is made from a certain number
of flats.
Trade refuse is collected on payment.
The contract for refuse removal changed hands during
the year and a new type of rear loading van is employed.
All the refuse is incinerated.
Schools.
The sanitary condition of the schools is, on the whole,
satisfactory, but in some of the non-provided schools the
closets and washing accommodation are poor. This matter
is at present engaging the attention of the Education
Committee.
Swimming Baths and Pools.
The water at both the open air and enclosed baths has
been kept under close observation. The water is tested for
the presence of chlorine several times a day, and samples
are sent for bacteriological examination from time to time,
and especially during busy periods. The reports have invariably
been highly satisfactory, and much credit is due to
the staff for the very efficient manner in which thev carry
out their duties.
