(/) External Eye Disease.
Seven cases of blepharitis were found at routine
inspections, and at special inspections one case of
blepharitis, four of conjunctivitis and two of corneal
opacity.
(g) Vision.
Forty or 3.6% of the children at routine inspections
were found to be suffering from some fairly serious
defect of vision, and a total of 151 children were referred
from various sources for refraction by the School
Oculist.
(It) Ear Disease and Hearing.
As a result of routine and special examinations 36
cases of discharging ears and 4 cases of deafness were
referred for treatment.
(i) Dental Defects.
Seven hundred and seven or 62.6% of the children
were found to be suffering from dental decay, 12.6%
having more than four teeth decayed and 50% having
less than four.
(/) Crippling Defects.
Two cases of spinal curvature and 20 cases of other
forms of deformities were discovered at routine and
special examinations.
Infectious Diseases.
Infectious diseases were not very prevalent during
the year, apart from a fairly general outbreak of
whooping cough and chicken-pox in May, June and
July. It was not necessary to close any school or department
of a school on account of infectious disease.
