E (3) Meat and Food Inspection
E (3)a Slaughterhouses Act and Regulations 1958.
There is one slaughterhouse in the Borough, and in pursuance
of the above Statute, the requisite Slaughterhouse
Report was duly submitted to the Minister of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food on 5th August, 1960 with a recommendation
that the "appointed day" should be 31st August, 1962,
but, at the request of the Minister, this date was amended to
1st October, 1962. In this regard, a copy of the Slaughterhouse
Report was forwarded to the slaughterhouse licencee
with a request that early attention should be given to the
carrying out of the works required.
As will be seen from the following prescribed tabulation,
in addition to other animals, 33,787 pigs were slaughtered
and inspected during the year, and in this connection,
a 100% inspection has been possible only by one of the
three Public Health Inspectors as per rota, being engaged
full time on meat inspection each week.
Thus it will be seen that meat inspection duties at the
slaughterhouse is equivalent to the whole time service of an
Inspector, and as in other years, slaughtering has taken
place daily and inclusive of every Saturday and Sunday.
Until legislation makes provision for regulating and
stabilising hours of slaughter, it would appear that the present
exacting situation is likely to continue.
