Erith Hairdressers and Barbers Shops Closing Order.
Dated 11th March, 1947. Closing Hour: Every evening 7
p.m.
(b) No partial exemption Orders with regard to Sunday
trading provided for by Section 48 of the Shops Act 1950
exist.
(c) The majority of unmixed trade shops in the Borough
close at 5.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
(d) New legislation, the object of which was to amend and
consolidate various obscure aspects of the Shops Act 1950
was wholly abandoned by the Legislature in May 1957. Thus
the Act of 1950 remains the applicable Statute which
requires that "shops must be closed for the serving of customers
after a specified hour." It had been hoped that a clarified
interpretation of this operative enactment would have
been decided in Parliament during the passage of the Shops
Bill, but in the absence of new Statute, it would appear that
a case at law may be necessary to solve the question whether
radio and television dealers' premises utilised for evening
demonstrations are open for the serving of customers.
(e) No legal proceedings were instituted during the year.
In one instance, informal action resulted in the selling of
cigarettes from a private dwelling being discontinued.
(f) The application of the provisions of Section 38 of
the Shops Act 1950 resulted in the following improvements:
Heating facilities provided or renewed 7
Washing facilities 3
Lighting improved 5
Sanitary conveniences 6
Seats provided 9
D (7) Sanitary Accommodation at Offices
In accordance with the requirements of Section 46 of
the Public Health Act 1936, all new offices provided in the
rapidly developing industrial area were provided with suitable
and sufficient sanitary conveniences.
Various improvements have been effected in sanitary
accommodation already existing at office premises.
D (8) Street Trading
There is no established street trading in the Borough,
there being only two mobile stalls sited in the shopping
area.
No nuisances have been detected at this source.
